SFW Perspectives Series - an Online Seminar
Two 2-hour sessions
February 8 (Tuesday) & 10 (Thursday), 2022 (6:00 - 8:00pm MST)
ravel photographer Nevada Wier is well known for her intimate approach to photographing people during her travels. However, it did not come easy to her when she began photographing. Travel photography requires the combination of technical expertise, culture competence, intuitive awareness, curiosity, and a dash of panache to create fresh, personal images that reveal the spirit of a place and its people. Like many people, Nevada was unsure how to best approach people in different cultures – not speaking the local language. Over many years she overcame her reluctance and now considers photographing the people she meets along the way the most rewarding part of her travels. In this two-session program, Nevada imparts lessons and tips for how she approaches the technical, practical, creative, and social aspects to create natural, respectful, and unique portraits. She discusses approaching people honestly and directly, working with short lenses, how to create an environmental portrait with natural light, flash, or reflectors. She brings you into people’s homes, as well as joining them in a variety of outdoor environments.
In Session One, Nevada discusses how to overcome shyness in approaching people during your travels, techniques for building rapport, and how to integrate nonverbal communication into your body language. She discusses what lenses to use in different situations and how to creatively frame your image. She analyses what makes a powerful close-up portrait, and more importantly how to integrate the environment into a portrait.
In Session Two, Nevada discusses the power of a spontaneous moment and the times when it is important to know how to choreograph a situation authentically. She discusses how she approaches being at crowded markets and fast-paced festivals. And, lastly, she illuminates how she works quickly with on-camera flash, a reflector, or LED lights.
Join Nevada for four evening hours in early February that gives you the skills and confidence to engage and interact with people during your travels, as well as elevate your aesthetic vision to create portraits that not only express the inner spirit of your subject, but also of yourself.

A Nobechi Creative Special Series
with Nevada Wier
Two 2-hour sessions
DECEMBER 7 & 9, 2021 (6-8PMpm MST)
Join me for deep-dive into working creatively with just one flash on your camera crafted special for Nobechi Creative -- and for an intimate group.
Nevada Wier is an avid user of only one flash, on the camera, when she travels. In two, 2-hour sessions, she will explain how she manages to make natural and compelling images using TTL on the go. She will help you set up your flash for subtle and creative lighting. You will also learn techniques for stopping action with slow shutter speeds and while panning, effective techniques for bouncing off walls and ceilings, when to use off-camera flash, and many other simple techniques. This seminar is geared towards photographers who use a separate dedicated flash, not a pop-up flash (although some the techniques will work for a pop-up) and want to primarily learn on-camera flash techniques for traveling on the go!
Session One live on Zoom (Tuesday, December 7th 5pm PST/6pm MST/7pm CST/8pm EST or Asia-Pac: Wed 12/8 10am JST/12pm AEDT)
Topics covered: How to set up your off-camera flash. The theory of Balanced Fill-Flash in different lighting and environmental condition. Understanding Ambient Light and Fill-Flash. How to effectively use bounce fill-flash. Essential flash accessories that fit in your camera bag, including what modifiers and gels to use in different situations.
Session Two live on Zoom (Thursday, December 9th 5pm PST/6pm MST/7pm CST/8pm EST or Asia-Pac: Fri 12/9 10am JST/12pm AEDT)
How to use a flash while Panning. Using flash to stop action. Understanding Rear Curtain Sync and Hi-Speed Sync. Off-Camera flash. How to use reflectors and a small LED light effectively.
Suggested Equipment: An off-camera flash is not essential for this seminar. However, it is advantageous so that you can master the setup, begin to practice the techniques, and ask questions during the sessions. If you do have a flash, please ensure that it is dedicated to your camera system and swivels up and down as well as side to side. Please check that you can program the output of the intensity of your flash either directly on the flash or on the camera. She will be sending out a detailed letter with more information to each participant before the seminar begins.
Sessions will be recorded for viewing for a limited time on a private channel exclusive to participants so that you can review Nevada’s lessons after the workshop is complete.
CLASS LEVEL: For all levels, but particularly suited for seasoned photographers and travelers. Please note this is a series of webinars with Q&A. There are no assignments.
CLASS SIZE: 25 students
TUITION: $350 per person.

Santa Fe Workshops Perspectives Series
Two 2-hour sessions
November 15 (Monday) & 17 (Thursday), 2021 (6:00 - 8:00pm MST)
Color. Light. Action. Pattern. These four elements are essential to a great travel image, and while a successful photograph isn't required to incorporate all of them, it does need to have at least two (and the gesture needs to be complete!).
In session one, travel photographer extraordinaire Nevada Wier focuses on the elements of color and light. Each communicates in different ways, and although the word photography means “writing with light,” that particular element is often upstaged by color. Most photographers rely heavily on color for basic composition and to convey mood and emotion. To balance the scales, Nevada explains how the endlessly shifting qualities of light can be harnessed at all times of day.
The second session covers action and pattern. Nevada shares tips for photographing fast motion in the field, by using not only stop-action but also panning, slow shutter speeds, and flash. She demonstrates the power of impeccable in-camera framing to create compelling compositions while detailing the ways that pattern repetition can strengthen your images' visual flow. Throughout, she stresses the importance of gesture and why it needs to be complete and recognizable.
Join Nevada for four informative hours that elevate your aesthetic vision and expand your photographic skills, preparing you to capture travel images that transcend the usual clichés.

A Nobechi Creative Special Series
with Nevada Wier and Eddie Soloway
Three 2-hour sessions
NOVEMBER 2 - 4, 2021 (6pm MST)
Join us for this lively seminar of creative, technical, and inspirational information, retooled and crafted special for Nobechi Creative -- and for an intimate group.
Nevada Wier and Eddie Soloway share a love for wild and remote travel destinations. Eddie makes a point of seeking out blank spots on the map, while Nevada passionately explores cultures far removed from our fast-paced world. For three evenings online, these two friends share stories, photographs, and practical advice, comparing notes on an engaging array of personal travel topics. Through photographic presentations and conversations, Eddie and Nevada chart the evolution of their aesthetic visions and examine the fluid demands of making photographs in the moment. Seeing deeply amidst the chaos and sometimes stillness of a place is essential for a thoughtful travel adventure. Equally important is the ability to tread lightly on the land and, if possible, to return periodically to a special location to deepen your connections.
They will touch on topics such as nonverbal communication, overcoming preconceived notions, and how to create evocative images that speak from your heart. They will also delve into the process of preparation for a thoughtful photographic journey, determining where to look, how to look, what to avoid, and which equipment to carry. They also take time to reflect on the experience of living through THE TIME OF COVID with their travels truncated, taking stock of the gifts received and the lessons learned, including the ability to embrace Plan B. Join two seasoned travel photographers who share an enduring friendship and a wealth of practical experience as you learn how to overcome preconceived notions about a place and come home with much more than a photograph.
Sessions will be recorded for viewing for a limited time on a private channel exclusive to participants so that you can review Nevada’s and Eddie’s lessons after the workshop is complete.
CLASS LEVEL: For all levels, but particularly suited for seasoned photographers and travelers. Please note this is a series of webinars with Q&A. There are no assignments.

Join Nevada Wier as she describes her exploration in making the invisible visible: photographing unusual places using the unusual, haunting light of infrared. “I love that I am creating an image of a subject that I can see…but rendering in light that that is invisible to my eyes; mildly surreal and metaphysical.” The resulting photographs are truly visual poetry.
